Chapter Nine
Blaise was sluggish, her movements heavy-limbed and she couldnât concentrate. When she missed a cue for the second time, Anders intervened. âBlaise, whatâs going on? Youâre not injured, are you?â
She shook her head, mumbling, âSorry, I didnât sleep well.â
âAnders cut her some slack,â said Kristoffer. âSheâs had some tough news.â He surreptitiously squeezed her hand as they faced the coach. Anders scowled at them both. âLook, the audience doesnât care what kind of day youâve had. They pay out hard-earned money and they deserve to see you at your best. The Olympic committee and the ISU donât care either - you have to be professional and just do the work.â Blaise straightened her shoulders. âI understand. I will try harder.â
Blaise was further distracted by Eva at the rink side. Convinced Eva was spying on them added to her discomfort. She kept glimpsing Eva out of the corner of her eye. Finally, Anders called a halt. âThat was better,â he said and left them to put the blade guards on their skates.
Kristoffer quirked an eyebrow at Blaise. âTime for a coffee?â
âOh, yes please!â
A few minutes later, with their skates safely stowed away, they sat in the coffee shop. It was still quite early and the place relatively quiet. Their coffees arrived, each with a warm and spicy, cinnamon twist.
âWe need to keep up our energy,â Kristoffer said, biting into one of the pastries. Blaise ignored hers, playing with a teaspoon instead. Finishing the last of his pastry, he asked, âStill not sleeping then?â
Blaise sighed. âItâs the dreams, Iâve never had such vivid dreams. Itâs like Iâm there.â
âWhere?â he asked, his eyes straying to her cinnamon twist.
âHere, but long, long ago. A woman watching her man going off to fight,â her voice wavered. âSheâs worried heâs not coming back.â As she spoke her eyes filled with tears. She bit her lip. âI canât explain why itâs affecting me, except, Kris, at times I think sheâs me.â Blaise swallowed and continued. âBut thatâs impossible.â
He squeezed her hand and said quietly, âIâve been having weird dreams too. They only started recently.â
Blaise felt her stomach flip. âHow recently?â
âHereâs the thing,â he said, âitâs only been since you arrived.â
Blaise met and held Krisâs hard gaze.
âWhy? Why is this happening?â Blaise absently began crumbling her pastry.
He leant in close to her. âBefore you came into my life, I didnât believe in ghosts and premonitions, past lives and all that. But now, I think we were meant to meet, to find each other. I think this is unfinished business.â
