Chapter Nine

Blaise was sluggish, her movements heavy-limbed and she couldn’t concentrate. When she missed a cue for the second time, Anders intervened. ‘Blaise, what’s going on? You’re not injured, are you?’

She shook her head, mumbling, ‘Sorry, I didn’t sleep well.’

‘Anders cut her some slack,’ said Kristoffer. ‘She’s had some tough news.’ He surreptitiously squeezed her hand as they faced the coach. Anders scowled at them both. ‘Look, the audience doesn’t care what kind of day you’ve had. They pay out hard-earned money and they deserve to see you at your best. The Olympic committee and the ISU don’t care either - you have to be professional and just do the work.’ Blaise straightened her shoulders. ‘I understand. I will try harder.’

Blaise was further distracted by Eva at the rink side. Convinced Eva was spying on them added to her discomfort. She kept glimpsing Eva out of the corner of her eye. Finally, Anders called a halt. ‘That was better,’ he said and left them to put the blade guards on their skates.

Kristoffer quirked an eyebrow at Blaise. ‘Time for a coffee?’

‘Oh, yes please!’

A few minutes later, with their skates safely stowed away, they sat in the coffee shop. It was still quite early and the place relatively quiet. Their coffees arrived, each with a warm and spicy, cinnamon twist.

‘We need to keep up our energy,’ Kristoffer said, biting into one of the pastries. Blaise ignored hers, playing with a teaspoon instead. Finishing the last of his pastry, he asked, ‘Still not sleeping then?’

Blaise sighed. ‘It’s the dreams, I’ve never had such vivid dreams. It’s like I’m there.’

‘Where?’ he asked, his eyes straying to her cinnamon twist.

‘Here, but long, long ago. A woman watching her man going off to fight,’ her voice wavered. ‘She’s worried he’s not coming back.’ As she spoke her eyes filled with tears. She bit her lip. ‘I can’t explain why it’s affecting me, except, Kris, at times I think she’s me.’ Blaise swallowed and continued. ‘But that’s impossible.’

He squeezed her hand and said quietly, ‘I’ve been having weird dreams too. They only started recently.’

Blaise felt her stomach flip. ‘How recently?’

‘Here’s the thing,’ he said, ‘it’s only been since you arrived.’

Blaise met and held Kris’s hard gaze.

‘Why? Why is this happening?’ Blaise absently began crumbling her pastry.

He leant in close to her. ‘Before you came into my life, I didn’t believe in ghosts and premonitions, past lives and all that. But now, I think we were meant to meet, to find each other. I think this is unfinished business.’
